Empowering People

Empowerment Zone businesses and residents can take advantage of many programs to support their journey to quality employment.

Job Profiles, Testing and Assessment for Target Businesses
This program offers standardized employee skill tests, an assessment of skills needed to perform the job and pre-employment training developed for a specific business and its needs. Liebert Corp. and BASF are currently users of the program, and additional manufacturing businesses have been targeted for program expansion.

Huntington Housing Authority Youth Empowerment Training
The Youth Empowerment Program works with at-risk youth, ages 14 to 21, offering GED, computer training, construction skills, job shadowing and job referrals.

Virtual Job Shadowing on the Web
Part of the Huntington Chamber’s website offers the opportunity to learn about many careers, including education and job requirements. “A Day at Work With” offers a glimpse into a real day’s work in specific fields.

Making Connections
A unique program offered with the Huntington Museum of Art, “Making Connections” teaches critical and creative thinking skills to Zone students. On February 1, 2002, “Building Blocks,” a sculpture constructed by 11 Zone teenagers, was dedicated and erected at the foot of the Robert C. Byrd Bridge.
